Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP IAPT) programme

The CYP IAPT programme is a 1-year course you can do funded by the NHS to apply for qualifying level training to become a family and systemic psychotherapist.

Background

The NHS has chosen to offer systemic family practice as one of its evidence-based interventions, seeing it as crucial in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

The Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy (AFSP) collaborated with an expert panel to develop modules in systemic practice that allow people to work as an IAPT practitioner for children and young people. Below, you can find out more about the modules and training.

What is the course?

The CYP IAPT systemic pathway is an intermediate level training covering:

  • Basic systemic skills
  • Depression and self-harm and conduct disorder (2 modules)
  • Adolescent eating disorders

Normally, the modules are part of a postgraduate diploma in the evidence-based psychological therapies for children and young people systemic pathway.

What are the career opportunities?

Successful graduates of the CYP IAPT systemic pathway training can apply to complete one of our accredited qualifying (years 3 and 4) training to become a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)-registered family and systemic psychotherapist.

Many CYP IAPT course graduates use their increased knowledge and skills to enhance their current professional role rather than going on to further training.

Is there any funding for the course?

The NHS funds these courses. So, you don’t pay tuition fees. Normally, you’re paid a salary while you train. Check with individual courses to see if there are also sponsorship opportunities.

How long is the course?

Most courses are 1 year, full-time.

Who is the course suitable for?

Usually services put CAMHS employees forward for the course.
