AFSP regional branches

Join your local branch of the Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy (AFSP) and become part of a thriving network across the UK. You’ll learn from each other, socialise and meet continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.

Our regional branches are run voluntarily by AFSP members. They help members gain CPD hours through events, conferences and workshops on a range of family and systemic practice and psychotherapy topics.

You don’t need to be a member to attend branch events, though AFSP membership is encouraged by the groups. You just need to have an interest in family and systemic practice.

The Cymru branch of AFSP has been running for many years and covers the whole of Wales. The committee has 6 meetings a year and an AGM, held online.

The branch supports Wales-based CPD events and has a strong partnership with the Centre for Systemic Studies/Family Institute Wales.

Our community of family and systemic psychotherapists and systemic practitioners is served through the AFSP Cymru newsletter (approximately 2 to 3 times a year), sharing opportunities to connect in person and online.

In the last year, the branch has contributed to national policy conversations related to the development of systemic practice and has a regular public sector group advocating for pay parity and career progression for family and systemic psychotherapists.

The Devon branch of AFSP is brand new and the plan is for it to cover all areas of Devon. This would be a great opportunity for enthusiastic people to join the branch, bringing their own ideas and hopes to this new endeavour.

We hope to create opportunities to share learning and, hopefully, peer supervision as these can be difficult to find in our rural areas. We also hope that we can arrange some exciting workshops in due course.

The Jersey branch of AFSP has been running since 1997, led by founding members Patricia Tumelty and Jane Pointon. We organise a range of training on the island of Jersey. This ranges from half-day workshops to 5-day training courses to help develop and maintain systemic thinking and practice on the island.

The Manchester branch of AFSP has been running for many years. It serves a large area of Greater Manchester. Due to our geographically wide area, the branch has meetings online once a month, alternating between a 9am meeting and a 7pm meeting to fit into people’s work and family lives.

The branch aims to organise a workshop every other year. We have a close relationship with the systemic courses provided by the Psychological Therapies Training Centre within Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Recent keynote speakers have included Polly Kaiser and Daniel Blake. We are also very appreciative for the contribution of workshops by Karen Seal, Elaine Farrer and Rachel Athisayam, and Noah Solarin.

During our meetings we have shared and discussed papers, connected over issues in relation to working in both public service and private practice and we've organised workshops.

We meet in person at least once a year and are always keen to welcome new attendees.

AFSP’s North East branch has been running for many years. It serves a large area, including Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Teesside, County Durham and parts of Cumbria.

The branch has online meetings every second month, which provide the opportunity to catch up on systemic activity in the region. Each meeting includes a CPD discussion on a specific article or podcast. In addition, the branch organises 2 face-to-face workshops a year, led by guest speakers. Recent speakers have included Dr Sarah Helps, Amy Urry and Glenn Larner. We are always keen to welcome new attendees.
