About Ruth L.

Originally from Malta and residing in Switzerland for the past sixteen years, I am a systemic psychotherapist with over twenty years of professional experience. I completed my specialist (long distance) postgraduate training in systemic thinking and practice, accredited by AFSP, and recognised as meeting the standards of a qualified Family Systemic Psychotherapist in the UK.

My early clinical work centred on families and couples across diverse social, cultural, and relational contexts, often in situations where emotional and mental health difficulties shaped family and couple dynamics. In parallel, I have supported individuals during periods of crisis and transition, including those working through unresolved past experiences, reflecting on significant relational decisions, sibling and family relationship difficulties, and struggles related to work and employment. Over the past decade, my practice has increasingly specialised in couple therapy. I work with couples experiencing complex relational challenges, including infidelity, persistent conflict, difficulties around intimacy and attachment, consensual non-monogamous relationship structures, neurodiverse dynamics, and the impact of mental illness on couple and family relationships.

I bring a dynamic, reflective, and creative approach to my work, grounded in post-modern and postcolonial systemic thinking. My practice is highly attuned to multicultural diversity and to the ways in which power, context, and intersectional identities shape relational experiences. I work collaboratively with clients to create a safe therapeutic space in which unspoken narratives can be explored, and where family members and partners are invited to listen to and engage with one another’s perspectives, emotions, and lived realities. This process supports the development of new meanings and relational stories that more authentically reflect clients’ experiences.

Alongside my clinical practice, I am a visiting lecture to the University of Malta where I give lectures to students reading Master's Programme. Currently, I am undertaking an online Diploma in Integrative Supervision accredited by UKCP and BACP. I am providing supervision as part of my training and it is another area I am hoping to continue contributing to upon my diploma completion.
